A Visit to the Beautiful South American City of Quito, Ecuador; city filled with beauty, history and culture. This is a trip that is worth making.
Quito is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 9,350 feet (2,850 m) above sea level, it is the highest official capital city in the world, and also on the equator. A city that was founded in 1534, yet has a history that dates much further back than even that.
Tradition, culture and worship can be seen and felt everywhere you turn. The beauty of this city is breathtaking. Surrounded by mountains and stunning architecture and swarming with friendly people, this city is a wonderful addition to anyone’s vacation itinerary.
I recommend that if you want to really experience the ins and outs of this city, that you find and hire a wonderful guide to help you. Someone who knows the city well. Most hotels are more than happy to point you in the right direction to help find the right guide for your needs.
From visiting the wonderful markets, to the many Churches…including The Church of La Compañía de Jesús, which began construction in 1605; it took 160
years to be built. By 1765 the work was completed with the construction of the façade. The entire interior of this Church is plated with 23 carat gold. It is a sight to see.
You will experience delicious and fresh foods that will leave you longing for more when you return home. The variety of specialties is almost overwhelming. I kept thinking, ‘What do I try next?!’
Visiting the different districts will allow you to see different styles of architecture, all of which are stunning.
You must take a trip to El Panecillo viewpoint, where you can stand at the base of the sculpture of the Virgin of Quito, a beautiful 45 metre high copy of the piece created in the eighteenth century by sculptor; Bernardo de Legarda. From here you have a wonderful view over the city and the surrounding volcanoes and mountains. Trust me, the view is spectacular and is something that needs to be on your bucket list.
A visit to La Ronda neighbourhood is also a must. This is a beautiful, traditional street representing Old Quito. Here you will find traditional foods, crafts and entertainment.
Come back for more…I will be adding more stories about each and every spot I visited and experience I was lucky enough to have while visiting Quito. You will not be disappointed!
