Taking to the Skies With Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Hilo, HI

Oh this was a trip of a lifetime! Cross one off of Willem’s bucket list! I arranged, with the help of Nadine Nakada, a tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters! We did the Circle of Fire plus Waterfalls tour and I have to say it was AMAZING!

I was honestly, terrified of the idea of getting into a helicopter, I’m not sure why, but I was…until I actually got into one!

After we checked in, everyone met in a lounge so we could get a safety briefing from John, he was fabulous. Made everyone very comfortable, answered everyone’s questions and told us everything we needed to know to have a safe and enjoyable ride.

Then they walked us out to the landing pads to our helicopters, we flew in an Eco-Star…very comfy! The Eco-Star seats 6 passengers and the pilot. All windows, so no matter where you are seated in it, you will have a great view!

We met our pilot, Jeremy, now this was a FUN guy (and no, I don’t mean mushrooms). They got us into our seats….which the seating is determined by the computer after they discreetly weigh everyone and their cameras etc…to be sure the helicopter is properly balanced. They really do take safety VERY seriously! When we are in our seats (1 passenger at a time is seated) they buckle you in, so you KNOW it’s done right, and they put your headphones on you. This is great, because Jeremy had so much information to tell us, and we could use a mic and ask him questions while we go. Once everything is all set and ready and Jeremy is given the Okay….we take off! Wow!

I was amazed at how relaxed I was; actually, you couldn’t slap the smile off my face! I was so excited! We first headed up to the volcano and got to see active lava flows! It was so cool! Jeremy told us all about the mountain, the history of eruptions and even how old most of the lava rock we saw was! It was neat to find out that some HUGE areas, which were the colour of mercury, were only hours old. We went over lost villages, you could still see remnants of roadways, and ONE house, still standing AND still lived in! The man has to hike 5 miles to get anywhere! Hopefully one day we can tell you more about that….since he turned his home into a B&B.

After checking out the volcano, we headed over the ocean a little bit, to see where and how the lava meets the water. So beautiful!

Ah then, what sites we get to see. We head to the rain forest to see some of the most beautiful waterfalls you could imagine! I kept wishing we could land and go swim in those pretty pools under all the falls, but well, we know that’s not going to happen, haha! There were so many waterfalls to enjoy on this tour. I do want to do a flight with them again someday. Maybe we can do the Big Island Spectacular sometime! I wonder if we can request a certain pilot? 🙂

I hated to have the tour end, I was really enjoying myself THAT much. If you ever get the chance, do yourself a favour…book a tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, believe me, you will NOT regret it!
